Hello Friends,
Sometimes a quilt makes you smile before you even sew the first stitch, and that was certainly the case with this delightful Blue Whale Quilt from Georgina that was designed by Tilda Fabrics.
This quilt was made using Tilda’s free Blue Whale pattern, a whimsical design featuring a pod of friendly whales swimming across a beautiful aqua sea. The combination of soft pastels, cheerful polka dots, and ocean-inspired colors creates a quilt that feels both playful and peaceful.
One of my favorite things about this pattern is the way each whale takes on its own personality through the fabric choices. The colorful whales seem to drift effortlessly across the quilt top, creating movement and a sense of calm. Against the fresh aqua background, the entire quilt feels like a sunny day by the ocean.
When it came time to quilt this fun one up , I wanted the quilting to enhance the underwater theme. Using freehand longarm quilting, I filled the background with flowing swirls, pebbles, bubbles, and currents that mimic the movement of water. The texture creates the feeling of whales gliding through the sea while adding beautiful dimension across the quilt.
Inside the whales, I incorporated additional quilting flower motifs to give each one its own character and texture. The contrast between the dense quilting and the simple whale shapes helps the design stand out while creating an image of whimsey.
One of the things I love most about quilting like this is how the quilting becomes part of the story. The piecing provides the whales, but the quilting brings the ocean to life. Every swirl and bubble adds another layer of movement, making the quilt feel alive from edge to edge.
This Blue Whale Quilt was such a joyful project to have on my longarm. It’s a reminder that quilts don’t always have to be serious to be beautiful. Sometimes the most charming designs are the ones that make us smile, spark our imagination, and transport us somewhere peaceful.
Thank you Georgina, of Petting Fabrics Quilt Shop, this quilt also was made with an extension to the original pattern making it a queen size quilt.
As well as Tilda Fabrics, for sharing this wonderful free pattern. It was a pleasure to quilt, and I hope it brings years of comfort, warmth, and happiness.
Until next time “Have a Sew Happy Day”
Jenn
