Hello Friend,
Every once in a while, a quilt comes along that you simply have to stop and study—and this beautiful Snowflake quilt is definitely one of those quilts.
From a distance, the gorgeous palette of icy blues, crisp whites, deep navy and touches of turquoise immediately gives you the feeling of a snowy winter day. But when you step closer, that’s when this quilt really begins to tell its story.
The paper-pieced sections are incredible.
There are angles, points and geometric shapes tucked throughout the quilt, along with traditional patchwork and snowflakes in so many different forms. The large snowflake in the center creates a beautiful focal point, while the smaller snowflakes scattered throughout make your eye wander from one section to another.
And there is SO much to discover!
One of my favorite things about this quilt is how beautifully structured it is while still having a wonderfully scrappy feel.
Different shades and prints of blue flow throughout the quilt, from the palest winter blue to rich navy, while the light fabrics give everything room to shine.
This was the kind of quilt that called for more than one quilting design.
Different areas were quilted to complement the piecing rather than compete with it. You’ll find texture, straight-line work, curves and detailed free-motion quilting tucked into the various sections.
I especially love the quilting surrounding the darker blue paper-pieced snowflakes. The flowing feathers and curves against those deep blue fabrics create such a beautiful contrast to all of the sharp geometric piecing.
In other areas, the quilting adds quiet texture—pebbles around a snowflake, radiating lines through angular sections, and lines that follow and emphasize the shapes created by the piecing.
That’s one of the things I love most about custom quilting: deciding when the quilting should make a statement and when it should simply step back and let the piecing be the star.
Just like real snowflakes, everywhere you look on this quilt you find something a little different.
Some are bold and intricate. Some are delicate. Some are surrounded by detailed piecing, while others seem to float quietly across the beautiful blue background.
The result feels almost like looking through a window during a snowstorm—layers upon layers of beautiful little details.
This quilt was truly a joy to have on the longarm. It’s the kind of piece that reminds me why I love quilting so much. Hours of careful piecing and beautiful fabric choices come together, and then the quilting adds that final layer of texture that brings everything to life.
Definitely take a closer look at the detail photos.
Thank you Becky it was a pleasure working with you.
Until next time, have a “Sew Happy Day”
Jenn. ❄️
